AVG 2013 vs AVAST 7 Antivirus

AVG has overcome its problematic past and has set its eyes on the future. The new user interface is similar to that of Windows 8. This redesign has not only made AVG easier to use but has also improved on its protection. AVG has reduced its installation size from 100mb to 33mb, allowing users to download and install AVG within 5 minutes. However, note that during the installation of AVG your web browser will randomly close without warning

On the other hand AVAST has had a reputation for unified approach to your computer security. AVAST has a clean interface, but basic users will not find the interface a walk in the park with hidden sub menus and confusing add-ons. AVAST  speeds up its installation process however this depends on the operating system. Overall installation took us 4 minutes and gave us warning about web browser closing.

Both programs include real time scans, Anti-root kit scans, automatic start up update, PC  analysers, cloud data backup, Firewall, Facebook wall Scan, E-mails scan, desktop gadgets (Windows Vista and 7) and safe search web browser add-ons.

AVAST

Pros

  • Free and Paid protection availed
  • High detection rates

  • Desktop Gadgets
  • Self protection

Cons

  • Firewall, Anti-spam only included in paid version

  • No Sandbox mode for free version

Speed

AVAST  will slow down on low end and some mid end computers, due to the high number of system resources needed. An average full computer scan takes 2.5-4 hours on high usage mode and 1.5-3 hours on low usage mode. Some users claim that their  internet has  slowed down due to AVAST searching for page ratings ,this will not be a problem for users with an internet speed of 2mbps or higher.

AVG will not slow down your computer regardless of specification.  An average scan using AVG will take 1.5-2 hours on high usage and 1-1.5 hours on low usage. AVG  internet scan does not slow down your internet speeds.

 Virus detection

Both programs have high detection rates. When tested, AVG  found all viruses and malware, however AVAST found all viruses and most malware. Both programs offer updates to the virus data base, AVAST updates its program and virus database on start up of the computer whereas with AVG the user will need to update the program manually.

Conclusion
AVG Anti-Virus and AVAST continue to offer an excellent if not perfect level of security, but AVG deserves a serious shot at being your go-to suite.

Absolutely no need for an anti-virus for a Mac. It’s funny that they are available but they won’t find visures for Macs mainly because there are none out there right now. There are existing Trojans and even a new Botnet out there but only infect pirated Apple software and you’d actually have to voluntarily install them. No real visures attacking the system software is out there at all.The other thing about Mac anti-virus software is that it does not work the same way as on a PC. For a PC the ant-virus software needs to embed itself into the system much the same way as a virus would do itself. Anti-virus software for Mac does not it has to work as a stand alone application looking in from the outside so to speak. It scans the files looking for oddities and may find visures sitting somewhere as unused PC files that can’t do anything because they are only for Windows anyhow.
