Samsung pl221 Camera Review

Background

The Samsung pl221, at first glance seems like any ordinary camera. Some may say it even looks a bit boring. However, they only deceive themselves, as it is not boring but far from it. So then, what’s so special? It’s neither the mega pixels nor the zoom; rather, it is actually the price. What one gets for this price is an excellent camera that can hold its own against other cameras twice, and dare I say it, thrice the price.

In-depth

The camera comes mainly in colours of red, black and silver all of which don’t disguise the fact that it looks pretty ugly. But for only £60.00 you can get an excellent 16.1 mg pixel camera. However, for a cheap camera, it takes some of the best photos I have seen, although it struggles in poorly lit conditions; which is mainly due to the cheap lens and weak flash. The camera comes with a 27 mm wide angle allowing you to take wider shots.

Some critics claim the camera has a poor response time disappointing those who wish to take images instantly. Nevertheless, its ‘slow’ response time of three seconds will most probably only disappoint professional photographers, since I personally don’t think it’s that slow.

However, it does require more time to fully focus onto the subject. Although, this can be overlooked due the fact that the buyer gets a huge array of settings for the camera from the basics like macro, to more complex features for taking the best shots. The amount of options can get a bit confusing, especially if you’re like me and just wish to point and shoot, no matter it comes with a smart mode that selects the optimum setting.

The Samsung supports 10x optical zoom and 5x digital zoom. It also comes with rechargeable batteries; not bad for just £60.00, but there’s still more. The pll221 supports a 720p video camera with sound, which is perfect for taking videos. The body houses an LCD screen and is 5.85 cm high, 10.04 cm wide and has a depth of 1.97 cm.

The Samsung pl221 can be found on Amazon for around £60.

Pros

  • Excellent price
  • Amazing camera, good zoom and good video recorder.
  •  Comes with a vast collection of modes and settings
  • Long battery life
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • Functions poorly in bad light
  • Weak flash
  • Some may find setting different advanced camera modes annoying if not using smart mode (which is rare).
  • Not best looking camera.

Verdict

I could drone on about the camera’s amazing ability but I thought it would be a better to show you a couple of images, as they say, a picture speaks a thousand words or more in this case, since it is 16 mega pixels. (Note that I am not the best photographer).

So is it worth the money… Yes every penny. This is simply one of the best cameras for amateur photographers and families alike.
